Yoseikan-Ryu Karate – Ocean Reef

Established in 2010 by Senior Instructor Owen Blockley (5th Dan), the Ocean Reef dojo is a proud part of the Yoseikan-Ryu Karate International family. Known for its strong technical foundation and inclusive culture, the dojo provides a welcoming and supportive environment where students of all ages and levels can thrive — whether they’re training for personal development, competition, or lifelong fitness.

At Ocean Reef, we believe in developing the complete karateka by nurturing all aspects of traditional and modern karate, including kata, kumite, and bunkai.

Owen Blockley

Head Instructor | 5th Dan | State Kata Coach

Owen Blockley is the Head Instructor of Yoseikan-Ryu Karate Ocean Reef and a respected figure in the Australian martial arts community, with a journey that spans more than three decades.

He began his martial arts training in 1987, exploring styles such as Bando Banshai (Burmese kickboxing), Savate, Tai Chi, and later Jujitsu with Jan De Jong to deepen his understanding of bunkai. However, it wasn’t until 2003 — when his son joined Yoseikan-Ryu Karate — that Owen reconnected with martial arts and truly found his calling.

From his earliest days at the Craigie Leisure Centre, Owen showed a natural aptitude for teaching. He quickly became a key part of the Yoseikan-Ryu community, developing a dynamic and detail-oriented coaching style that has become his trademark. In 2010, he opened the Ocean Reef dojo, which has since become a thriving hub for both traditional karate and elite-level competition training.

A State Kata Coach since 2020, Owen has played a pivotal role in developing some of Western Australia’s top kata athletes. His students have achieved success at every level — from grassroots to national and international podium finishes, including gold at the Australian National Championships and medals at the Oceania Championships.

Owen holds a Level 1 NCAS coaching accreditation and has mentored numerous instructors within Yoseikan-Ryu to achieve their own qualifications. His coaching extends beyond kata, contributing significantly to the development of the Yoseikan kumite squad as well.

Professionally, Owen is a Senior Civil Designer, a role that reflects his meticulous nature and eye for detail — qualities that enhance his ability to fine- tune performance in martial arts. But above all, it’s his passion for teaching and commitment to student growth that make him such a beloved and respected instructor.

Nathan Blockley

Senior Instructor | 1st Dan | State Kumite Coach

Nathan Blockley began his karate journey in 2003 at just six years old, inspired by discovering his dad’s old kung fu certificates and a desire to complement his soccer training. What began as a childhood curiosity quickly became a lifelong passion.

Under the guidance of his father, Owen Blockley, Nathan immersed himself in karate — training with commitment, discipline, and enthusiasm. By 2007, he had earned his Junior Black Belt, and in 2018, he achieved his Senior Black Belt (Shodan). Over the years, Nathan has built an impressive competitive résumé, representing Western Australia and Australia at both national and international levels.

As a dual-discipline athlete in kata and kumite, Nathan has earned medals across Europe, America, and Australia. Now a State Kumite Coach, he brings a wealth of experience and energy into every class. Nathan is known for his technical insight, approachable teaching style, and ability to connect with students of all ages.

“When I was five years old, I got so excited every night I got to go to karate. Twenty-two years later, I still feel that same excitement — but now, I get to be the one providing that to our students. I relish every chance I have to pass on the principles and values karate has given me over the years.”

Nathan is proud to be part of the Yoseikan-Ryu Ocean Reef team, helping shape the next generation of karateka.

Kevin Chalklin

Instructor | Senior 2nd Dan | Life Member

Kevin Chalklin has been a dedicated member of Yoseikan-Ryu Karate since 2002. Drawn to the club's rich history, expert instruction, and welcoming community, Kevin has found karate to be a lifelong source of physical and mental well-being. His commitment and passion have earned him the rank of Senior 2nd Dan and the title of Life Member.

Today, Kevin finds great fulfilment in giving back to the dojo by mentoring students of all ages. He takes pride in helping both children and adults grow — not just as martial artists, but as individuals.

“Training through the years has kept me physically and mentally fit. Nowadays, I enjoy helping children and adults alike grow as people.”

Luca Goodall

Instructor | Junior Black Belt

Luca Goodall began her karate journey in 2010 and has grown into a confident and passionate instructor. As a Junior Black Belt, Luca brings enthusiasm and empathy to every class, aiming to uplift and inspire each student she teaches.

She sees teaching as an opportunity to build a strong, supportive community while also pushing herself to grow as both a martial artist and mentor.

“Witnessing students develop confidence and character encourages me to continue teaching. It also keeps pushing me to learn and grow as an instructor and within my own training sessions.”

“My children have attended Yoseikan-Ryu Karate at Ocean Reef for approximately 5 years and continue to do so. The staff are very professional and have always been very supportive. Our Kids look forward to the weekly training sessions and gradings as they come up throughout the year.

As a parent, I feel Yoseikan-Ryu Karate has been an important part of our children's development, giving them the confidence to accept challenges they face in daily life.”
