Welcome to Yoseikan-Ryu Karate Maylands

At Yoseikan-Ryu Karate, our personal approach is what makes us the best Karate School in Perth. We place community and people first. We asked ourselves what is vitally important to our students and their families. That is why we don't just teach karate - we empower children and adults with important life skills and a sense of community. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to this or are just ready to take it to the next level.

Yoseikan-Ryu Karate Maylands has been teaching karate to the local community since 2016. The club started in The Rise community centre and has been operating as a full time dojo since 2021. We’ve had the pleasure of teaching karate to over 500 students from Maylands and surrounding suburbs.

Testimonials

  • Suzy Watson

Description“Jon is an experience dedicated coach, who has helped my children with goal setting, technical development and competition. The Dojo has a great team vibe and it clear all the students are enjoying their time.” goes here

  • Liam McNamara

Yoseikan Ryu Karate in Maylands is an absolutely fantastic martial arts school! My son has been training here for a year now, and the improvements I’ve seen in him go far beyond just karate. His confidence has skyrocketed, his concentration has sharpened, and his discipline has improved noticeably in all areas of life.

Jon and Jason are incredible, they’re patient, knowledgeable, and they truly care about their students’ progress. The entire dojo has such a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, making it a great place for kids to grow both physically and mentally. I couldn’t be happier with the experience, and I highly recommend

  • Stephanie Mitchell-Ta

Couldn't be happier with my son's decision to give Karate a go this term. He's become much more confident in himself, willing to give things a go and he feels like Karate could be "his thing" which has been so nice to see for a little man who has taken a while finding something he loves. Such a lovely group of young people and Jon is brilliant as their teacher. Thankyou!

Jonathan Staynor – Head Instructor for Maylands

Jon is a 3rd Dan black belt and leads Yoseikan-Ryu Karate Maylands alongside his partner Samantha. He started karate at the age of six, with the aim of fighting like the Power Rangers! Jon has an extensive career as a karate competitor, winning several medals when representing Western Australia and Australia at National and International competitions.

As well as his competitive achievements, Jon was a State Karate Coach from 2013 – 2019 where he coached Western Australia’s top athletes. At Yoseikan-Ryu Karate Maylands, he has developed a strong and competitive tournament squad with competitors from as young as 7 years through to veterans. In 2024 Yoseikan-Ryu Karate Maylands won over 50 medals in Western Australian State League Tournaments and the Squad is continuing to grow.

Outside of karate Jon has a PhD in Sport Biomechanics - the study of the mechanics behind human movement. Jon uses this expertise in his teaching, with a strong eye for detail and coaching functional and efficient karate.

Jon works hard to foster and develop all of the members both physically, mentally and emotionally through karate. He is a big believer in everyone having a unique potential and enjoys helping people create and achieve their goals. He takes great pride that many people have found a second home at Yoseikan-Ryu Karate Maylands.

Karate has given me a foundation for everything I have achieved in my life. It brings me great joy to provide the opportunities I had to the children and adults we teach today.”

Samantha D’Uva

Samantha started karate in 2020 with the aim to develop confidence in her ability as a woman to protect her two young boys. In 2022 she moved her training to Yoseikan-Ryu Karate Maylands and in 2024 she achieved her Senior Black Belt after a year of dedicated and purposeful training. She is also one of Yoseikan-Ryu Karate Maylands’ tournament competitors, winning multiple State League events and in 2023 won the West Australian Karate League Award for best competitor.

Samantha finds great importance in the tradition, culture and art of martial arts and karate. She is a strong believer in following and teaching the etiquette and loyalty that ties in as a major component. Tradition and art are what makes karate much more than a sport. Samantha has an appreciation for the arts and completed her Honours in Piano Performance at WAAPA in 2014.

Samantha brings out and encourages determination, mindfulness and intention in our students training. She also leads by example, regularly training in our classes. Samantha particularly excels in encouraging other Women and teenage girls to strive for personal excellence and find a place within our Karate community and has led many community and social events and celebrations at our dojo.

Jason Le

Jason is currently a Junior Black Belt in Yoseikan-Ryu Karate. He started karate in 2017 after hearing how great it was from his brothers. He is an excellent teacher, particularly excelling teaching and creating fun and safe learning environments for our younger students. As well as teaching he is a qualified State Karate Judge since 2022 and is continuing to enhance his knowledge and experience in this field. Jason uses his experience as a referee to help provide a different perspective to our students and competitors development.

Outside of karate Jason is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in software engineering at UWA.

“Karate has shown me what hard work and dedication can achieve. Passing on the knowledge and watching the students grow and learn is one of the most enjoyable experiences in life.”

Mark Shaprio

Mark is a Yoseikan-Ryu Nidan (2nd Dan) and teaches karate at Yoseikan-Ryu Karate Maylands. Mark’s elder son started karate at age 8 in September 2013, and instead of sitting and watching the lessons Mark decided to also start karate, aged 52 at the time. He attained his Black Belt in 2018 at age 57.  His lesson to others is that if you want something badly enough, hard work, commitment, and determination will get you there. Mark continues to train and is working towards his Sandan (3rd Dan).

Mark is an accountant by profession, and has worked mainly in the education sector throughout his career. “It is what’s behind the numbers that counts”, he says.

“Karate has provided me with a new focus in my life. I love training, learning, and teaching. Hopefully, I am an inspiration to my children, and also to my students”.
