JAYDA GLEDHILL- WOMENS -SENIOR FEMALE -55KG, U21 FEMALE -55kg

1. How old are you? 19 years old

2. What year did you start karate? 2012 in Melbourne when I was 6 years old and then when I moved to Perth I joined Yoseikan-Ryu in 2020 at the age of 12.

3. What grade are you? Junior Shodan

4. Which Yoseikan-Ryu dojo do you train at? Malaga

5. What suburb do you live in? Subiaco

6. What do you do outside karate (school, university, work, hobbies)? I’m a first year student studying Sport and Exercise science at UWA. I love catching up with friends and spending time with my family.

Your Karate Journey

7.What made you decide to start karate? I first was introduced to karate after watching a movie on my Dads friend Judd Reid about his karate journey (100 man fight) after going to the premiere of that movie I said I wanted to start karate and my parents found the closest club near me and I joined up the next week. I was never really into other sports like dancing or ball sports and I just fell in love with the sport.

8.Why did you choose Yoseikan-Ryu Karate over other martial arts clubs in Perth? After moving from Melbourne we heard some really good things about Yoseikan-Ryu they had a really good elite level training program and is one of the very few clubs who have produced world medallists. I also had visited the dojo previously when I came to visit from Melbourne and knew it was the right place to join.

9.. What were your goals when you first started? I didn’t really have any goals when I first started, I just tried to enjoy every moment and keep learning as I went on.

10. Did you have any concerns before joining? When I first started at Yoseikan I didn’t have any concerns as everyone was really nice and welcoming, obviously a bit scared about fitting in but that went away really quickly and I felt at home right away after a few weeks. I was a bit scared of Branco at first though I realised although he has a tough looking exterior he’s very welcoming and makes training fun.

Training Experience

11. What is your favourite part of training? Seeing my friends, training hard and improving as well as being able to just focus on training and forget everything else which is something I only feel at training

12. What skills have you developed through karate? I feel as though I have gained confidence through karate being able to stand up for myself. I also have learnt to be more independent, realising that if you want change you need to do it yourself. Also perseverance and resilience not giving up when times are hard. Being able to continue growing and achieving my goals.

13. How has karate helped you outside the dojo? Similar to the question before, it has helped me in several different ways. For example when I’m doing a test or something that I’m struggling I remember to never give up and persevere through any challenge that arises. So it has definitely helped with my mentality. It’s also helped me be more confident with myself and who I am, being able to not care what others think of me.

14. What do you enjoy most about the Yoseikan-Ryu community? I love all the people who are a part of the Yoseikan Ryu community. Everyone is there for each other and it just feels like home whenever I walk into the dojo. No matter if you’re first starting or have been there for a while, Yoseikan Ryu makes everyone feel like they belong.

15. What makes Yoseikan-Ryu different from other karate clubs? It is a very good club with great instructors and an overall amazing community. Everyone is so nice and welcoming and I’m blessed to be a part of such an awesome karate club.

Competition and Achievement

16.What is your competition experience?. I’ve competed in several competitions now, I first started competing when I was 8. Ever since then I have loved competing, it’s a feeling like no other, that is why I keep continuing to compete.

17.What achievement are you most proud of? I’m most proud of helping win the Women’s team event for the 5th time at the KA Nationals in Hobart 2026. Being the last fight and it all coming down to me was a lot of pressure. Being down the whole fight and being able to come back and score 6 points in less than 10 seconds was a surreal moment and made me realise that you really can do anything if you trust yourself and believe, something I have definitely learnt through karate. This is my proudest moment recently. Another proud moment was when I won my first round at the Junior World Championships in Venice, being on the world stage and representing Australia at my first ever world championships was a very proud moment for myself.

18.What challenges have you overcome through karate? A big challenge I faced was in 2022 when I broke my hand at the Aus Open. After finding out it was broken I was so upset as I only had 6 weeks to recover to compete at the Oceania championships which I was selected for. This was a big challenge as I found a way to train only using my left hand. I have faced other little challenges like having fights where I need to win to get selected for something - having to overcome mental challenges to be able to achieve those goals

19.What are your current karate goals? Well this year I have had a few like winning the Australian Open and Nationals which I have achieved as well as getting selected for the Junior World championships which I also achieved. Now the next goal is to do as well as I can on the international stage and come back with a medal from the World Championships.

20.What are you working on improving right now? I’m currently working on improving my movement and distance when fighting as well as trusting myself to just go for it which has definitely improved. But always striving to be better and improve.

It is an amazing club and I’m so glad I am a part of it.
